Creative New Wedding Traditions During a Global Pandemic

This past year was anything but normal. And our engaged friends really had to get creative with their wedding plans. We asked our audience to share their COVID wedding stories. We’ve got it all—the good, the bad, and the…strange.

“I got married July 4th, 2020, in Texas when cases started going up again. We went from around 90 people to 25 in a matter of 48 hours, but it was still an amazing day!”

Whitney F.

“My son became an officiant so we could get married. We had to move the date and the only day that worked was my dad’s birthday. He passed in 2011, and it was like it was meant to be. We had it in our neighbor’s backyard, facemasks and all. Planning a reception with family when we can!”

Bethany A.

“We were supposed to get married on 06-14-20, then COVID hit and all embassies closed around the world. They canceled my K1 visa interview in March 2020, and after a long journey to expedit the interview, approved with his deployment orders, I managed to enter the US on 12-24-20 and we will get married on 02-14-21, finally!! We were separated for 16 months.”

Phoenixia O.

“I got married a couple days before everything shut down. [Just celebrated our first anniversary!] We just did a small courthouse thing because he was deploying.”

Ashleigh B.

“Our neighbor’s wedding was planned for late March 2020—just two weeks after our city shut down. Out of an abundance of caution, they cancelled their in-person, 150-person wedding (rescheduled for March 2021), but decided they didn’t want to wait a year to be married. So, they moved their wedding to Zoom and their immediate family and their pastor joined them on Zoom while they stood on their back patio in a suit and gown. We happened to be doing some yard work earlier in the day while they were setting the stage for their backyard Zoom wedding and got ourselves invited over. So we acted as their iPhone wedding photographers to give them memories of their special day!”

Michelle S.

“Originally 08-15-20, we moved it to 02-27-21; it’s been a roller coaster of emotions, however—it was a fairytale wedding! We had our family and friends witness our Love before God!”

Dorie C.

“We got married while he was in tech school in Texas. It was just our parents and the officiant. I surprised him by actually having a wedding dress and we wrote our own vows. It was the absolute perfect day. I brought my little radio so we could dance to ‘Moonlight Serenade’ by Glenn Miller for our first dance. I love him so much and cannot wait to see him again.”
