Why Military Families Love Edelweiss Lodge and Resort
I first heard about Edelweiss Lodge and Resort, the Armed Forces Recreation Center Resort in Germany, as a young military spouse over ten years ago. Being stationed in England at the time, it was a popular holiday vacation. Everyone that went raved about how beautiful it was, how much fun their family had, and recommended we go as soon as we could. So of course, I was skeptical. I had heard so much hype about the resort, I thought it had to be overrated. Now that I have finally gone, I can happily say that I was very wrong. It is truly a dream holiday for military families. And compared to many nearby hotels, we found Edelweiss offered exceptional value, especially considering the spacious rooms, included amenities, and location in the heart of the Bavarian Alps.
Operated by the Armed Forces Recreation Center, Edelweiss Lodge and Resort is available to eligible U.S. military members, veterans, retirees, and certain DoD civilians, making it one of the most affordable ways for military families to experience Bavaria.
From the moment we arrived, it was clear that Edelweiss was designed with families in mind. While my husband checked into our room, my children made a beeline to the kids area in the lobby where there were small chairs for them to sit and watch a movie. I took my time admiring the lodge itself with a massive fireplace and ample seating to take in the views. The welcoming atmosphere was immediately apparent. We all felt that we could relax and enjoy ourselves.
The setting alone is worth the trip. Nestled in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, Edelweiss Lodge and Resort is perfectly positioned for exploring southern Bavaria.
Surrounded by stunning mountain scenery, lush forests, and traditional Bavarian villages, there were breathtaking views in every direction. Whether enjoying a morning coffee on our balcony, or simply walking around the resort, the beauty of southern Germany was impossible to ignore. Our room was spacious, clean, and thoughtfully designed for families. The private balcony overlooking the Bavarian Alps quickly became one of our favorite places to unwind after a day of exploring. It offered the comfort of a resort while still feeling relaxed and welcoming, making it easy to settle in from the moment we arrived.
One of the resort’s greatest strengths is the family-friendly atmosphere. It is clear they designed the experience with children in mind. In addition to the children’s area in the lobby, the swimming pool was a favorite for my children. There was a place for everyone. A main swimming pool, a shallower splash area for toddlers, a massive outdoor hot tub, and plenty of loungers for those who just wanted to watch. As a parent, I especially appreciated there were life vests available for free, and always a life guard on duty. These little touches made it easier for us to enjoy our time together. One of the things we appreciated most was sharing the experience with other military families. It created an instant sense of community that you simply don’t find at most vacation destinations.
Things to Do Near Edelweiss Lodge
Beyond Edelweiss Lodge and Resort, Edelweiss serves as an excellent base for exploring Bavaria. Walking through Garmisch-Partenkirchen became one of our favorite parts of the trip. The hotel offers several bookable excursions, but as we had rented a car, we chose to explore on our own. One day we walked the streets of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and admired the spectacular mountain views, gardens, and local shops and food. Another, we made the trip to Neuschwanstein Castle and the nearby town of Füssen where we ate at a traditional German restaurant.
Everywhere we went felt like a fairytale, and the food was incredible. One thing that surprised us was just how much there was to do near Edelweiss Lodge and Resort. Within an hour’s drive, families can visit Neuschwanstein Castle, ride the Zugspitze cable car, hike through Partnach Gorge, explore the colorful streets of Mittenwald, or relax beside the crystal-clear waters of Eibsee. Even after several days, we still had plenty left on our list.
