Let’s dive into a topic that resonates deeply within the military community—resiliency. We often hear the term resilience, but what does it truly mean for military spouses? How can we maintain a positive mindset in the face of constant change and challenges? In this article, we’ll explore the power of mindset, the ease with which military spouses can slip into negativity, and how we can leverage resilience to not just bounce back, but bounce forward. Additionally, we’ll uncover everyday tips for feeling rested and restored, even when time is limited. So, let’s delve into this transformative journey together!

Resiliency goes beyond merely bouncing back to where we were. It’s about embracing personal growth and becoming a better version of ourselves through the lessons learned and challenges faced. As military spouses, maintaining a positive mindset can be tough. The ever-changing nature of military life presents us with constant adjustments and trials. While we are often praised for our resilience, it’s important to acknowledge that it’s not always realistic or sustainable to maintain a positive mindset at all times.

Embracing Rest as a Path to Resilience:

When confronted with numerous challenges and changes in our personal lives, it’s crucial to take a step back and assess our well-being. As military spouses, we tend to forge ahead, constantly pushing ourselves to get through the next hurdle without pausing for much-needed rest and restoration. However, neglecting our own self-care can lead to exhaustion and burnout.

Recognizing the Need for Rest:

During a particularly challenging year, I faced an overwhelming array of personal and professional changes. People around me would ask how I managed to remain positive amidst the chaos. It was during this introspective period that I realized the importance of rest and restoration. For far too long, I had been pushing forward, believing that simply getting through each challenge was enough. But it wasn’t. I needed to intentionally create moments of rest in my life.

The Power of Strategic Rest:

Rest isn’t just about physical relaxation or taking a nap; it’s about finding meaningful moments of rejuvenation. I call it “strategic pause.” By consciously incorporating small bursts of rest into our daily lives, we can make a significant impact on our mental well-being. Setting boundaries, learning to say no, and prioritizing personal space are vital steps toward achieving this balance. Although it may disappoint others, fighting for our own rest and self-care is essential. As military spouses, we often neglect the topic of rest, but it’s time to change that narrative.

Tips for Rest and Restoration:

Consider what brings joy and restoration to your life, even if it’s just for 15 minutes a day. Restorative activities can take various forms, depending on your needs. Engage in mindfulness or meditation to replenish mental energy. Treat yourself to a relaxing bath with aromatic salts to recharge your physical well-being. Find solace in prayer or spiritual practices to nurture your soul. Remember, these moments of restoration are not selfish but necessary for our overall well-being.

As military spouses, we owe it to ourselves, our families, and our service members to prioritize self-care and resilience. By embracing rest and nurturing our mindset, we can transcend mere survival and truly thrive. Take a moment to evaluate whether you are thriving or merely surviving. If you find yourself stuck in survival mode, commit to dedicating 15 minutes each day to activities that restore and revitalize you. You deserve it.

If you’re interested in further support and guidance on your journey to resilience, I invite you to connect with me for coaching. Together, we can navigate the challenges and foster a positive mindset that will empower you to bounce forward and embrace a fulfilling military spouse life.
