5 Best Pets for Military Families

Military families are not just military members and their loved ones; they also often include a pet. Below are five different pets to help you find the best fit for your family.

Cats

Cats are amazing for military families because of their flexibility in being low maintenance and can bathe themselves. Cats can easily fly in the cabin with you to your new duty station and adjust to a new home in no time if you have a spare cardboard box lying around. Although occasionally particular in behavior, cats can be a source of entertainment and love for your family.

Dog

Dogs are known as man’s best friend for a reason. The snuggles and energy they give when a deployed loved one is away can keep fear and worry at bay. Keep in mind flying and housing restrictions on certain breeds when looking for your next fluffy companion. Dogs require the most upkeep out of any pet on the list, but if you love them, they are worth the work.

Fish

Fish are fantastic pets to have for those who want a soothing, quiet atmosphere to reduce stress. Keeping fish alive is not as simple as one might think. It would be best if you had more than water, fish, and food. Distinct varieties of fish have various needs and live for years depending on care, which means traveling with them may not always be possible.

Hamster

If you find yourself stationed at a new base and you know you’ll be there for a while but don’t want a ten-year commitment, a hamster might be the perfect animal for your family. Hamsters live around three years, take up minimal space, and are inexpensive. Another perk is you don’t have to wake up in the middle of the night to potty train them.

Pet Rock

Pet rocks are the most hands-off pet on this list. Easy to teach to sit, and with a bit of cajoling, roll over easily. You never have to take them to the vet or find sitters for your pet rock. Luckily, there are no current limits on the number of pet rocks you can have in base housing, meaning you can have as many as your heart desires.

Whatever pet you decide to have as a military family, make sure you do your research so your pet can live a long and happy life.
