Some famous faces are current and former military spouses! Did you know that:

pc: ANDRE NIESING

Brianna Keilar, CNN news anchor, is married to an active duty Army officer. Brianna’s wedding cake was featured on the cover of our February 2018 issue of Military Spouse. Read more about Brianna’s wedding and how the couple welcomed a new baby boy last summer. Brianna recently launched a new column called Homefront all about the stories of military families.

Barbara Bush, former first lady and the matriarch of Bush family, was once also a military spouse. During WWII, the future President George H.W. Bush was stationed aboard a ship in the Pacific Ocean as a young naval aviator. He looked forward to receiving letters from Barbara at home.On Sept. 2, 1944, Bush was shot down over Chichi Jima in the Pacific. Not long after, Barbara received a letter from George assuring her that “all was well,” but the letter was dated before George’s plane had been hit. George survived and returned home to marry Barbara on January 6, 1945, while he was home on leave.

Nikki Haley, is an American politician who served as United States Ambassador to the United Nations and previously served as the 116th Governor of South Carolina. Her husband is a currently serving officer in the South Carolina Army National Guard. Just like many military families, the Haley family has faced the challenge of deployment and balancing career and family as a military spouse.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court and beloved American icon, met her husband while he was serving in the military. Ruth married Martin Ginsburg a month after her graduation from Cornell. They moved to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he was stationed as a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps officer in the Army Reserve. Ruth worked for the Social Security Administration and was demoted after the birth of her first child. The next year, she enrolled in Harvard Law School. While Martin’s time in the military was short, the love the Ginsbergs shared was long-lasting.

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, a member of the British royal family because she is married to Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, who is expected to become King of the United Kingdom which would make her a likely future queen consort. When she married the Prince, she also became a military spouse just like you (!), well, kind of… His military service with the British Armed Forces ended in September 2013. Prince Harry, also served in the military until June 2015 and served two tours in Afghanistan, before he married Meghan, so she missed the chance to be a milspouse by just under two years.

Also, meet some of the FIRST milspouse influencers:

Fremont, McClellan, Sherman, and Grant. Behind these 4 generals were their wives who impacted the way the Civil War turned out (go figure!). The wives who held down the homefront also influenced their husbands’ service.

Grant needed constant assurance of Julia’s love and constant “sunshine” as he called it, from her – a loving domestic oasis that provided him a respite from the horrors of war. Unable to write her husband as often as he liked, she traveled more than 10,000 miles over four years to be with him as often as she could.

Read more about the women behind the generals here.

And then there is…

  • Martha Washington
  • Raelynn
  • John Oliver
  • Anna Chlumsky
  • Rosalynn Carter
  • Philip Wheeler
