Top 5 Military Romance Movies of All Time

With the holiday season fast approaching, I’ve been feeling a little extra sentimental lately. Something about the new, crisp chill in the air, the shortening days and the gorgeous hues of fall leaves makes me long for nights curled up on my sofa with a cozy blanket, a cup of tea, and a movie. And what better movie to watch than a military romance movie sure to make you swoon and reminisce over your own military love story? The following is a list of some of the best military romance movies of all time. I judged these movies both on their caliber of storyline and also on what truly makes a great romance movie, the ability to make me sob into my popcorn. 5. Top Gun (1996) The Gist : No compilation of military movies would be complete without this All-American tale of competition between pilots training at the U.S. Navy’s elite fighting school. Weep-O-Meter : Choked up sniffling. This fun, exciting and at times, heart-warming tale with also have you reaching for the tissues at some point as your heart cries out for the brave soldiers it centers around. 4. An Officer and a Gentlemen (1982) The Gist : This movie is at times both a romance and a coming of age story centering around Zack Mayo, a young man who enlists in the Navy Aviation Officer Candidate School and needs to make some big decisions about what he wants out of life. Weep-O-Meter: Sneaky sniffles. This movie is full of happy moments but it will catch you off guard with moments of poignant tragedy so keep the tissue box handy just in case. 3. American Sniper (2014) The Gist : The true story of Navy Seal Chris Kyle’s life, this movie will hit a little too close to home for many military spouses out there in it’s portrayal not just of the heroic feats accomplished by Chris Kyle, but also how his tours affected his wife (We love Taya Kyle - buy her book, American Wife , here ) and family back home. Weep-O-Meter: Don’t wear your mascara. It’s impossible not to be affected by this movie. It had me alternately on the edge of my seat in fear for Chris Kyle and curled around my box of tissues in commiseration with his wife’s tragic loss. 2. Pearl Harbor (2001) The Gist : A tale of friendship, love and betrayal that follows two friends as they enter World War II as Pilots stationed at Pearl Harbor. Weep-O-Meter- Gasping sobs as you watch this beautiful tale of love, friendship, forgiveness and sacrifice. 1. Atonement (2007) The Gist : This movie, set in the 1930s, is based on a novel by Ian McEwan and centers around star crossed lovers and the betrayal that tears them apart. Weep-O-Meter: Heart-wrenching. This movie had my heart clenched in the vice of it’s tragic plotline as I cried ugly tears loud enough to alarm my neighbors.
