Thirty-four years ago, I became a military spouse. I was a young and newlywed and had never been far from home so when we were moved to an airbase across the country, I’ll admit that I was nervous. But it took less than a week for me to discover the wonderful comfort of becoming a tight-knit community. We worked together, played together, and when anyone was in need, you could bet we would all pull together to help.
During our time in the service, I learned what it meant to be a soldier. I expected the men and women who served our country to be brave, and loyal, and committed to their duty. But, I discovered that everyone in uniform had another quality…the need to protect.
Living in a rural area of the Midwest means that I grew up knowing everyone in my small town. It wasn’t until I was older that I realized that even tiny communities have mysteries that are shrouded in darkness.
