Why Military Spouses Should Get Real Estate Licenses

Military spouses are often overlooked when it comes to professional opportunities. However, their unique skill sets and experiences make them excellent candidates for a variety of careers, including real estate.

As a military spouse myself, I understand the challenges of constantly relocating and navigating the housing market in new areas. Over the years, I have honed my skills in communication, organization, and problem-solving, all of which are essential in the real estate industry.

One of the biggest advantages military spouses bring to the table is their ability to adapt quickly to new situations. Moving to a new location and finding a home is a daunting task, but military spouses are well-equipped to handle the challenge. We are accustomed to change and know how to research and find the best options for our families.

In addition, military spouses are great at networking and building relationships. We have a vast network of military and civilian contacts, which can be invaluable in the real estate industry. Whether it’s connecting with other military families or building relationships with local businesses and organizations, military spouses have the skills and experience to forge meaningful connections.

Finally, military spouses are resilient and determined. We have learned to navigate the challenges of military life, and we approach our work with the same determination and perseverance. When it comes to real estate, we are willing to go the extra mile to ensure our clients find the perfect home.

I never thought in a million years I would end up in the real estate industry. With a background in marketing working for ad agencies and global consulting firms, real estate was not on my radar. Yet when a PCS triggered a lay-off from my corporate job, I quickly discovered how real estate saved my professional career and could save yours too.

You see, military spouses in the real estate industry are such a perfect pairing–a pairing that many often overlook because of the challenges that come along with military life. Consistent moving poses a lot of issues such as state licensing issues and starting a new book of business in a different market. Yet when we flip both of those major challenges into opportunities you can’t help but see why the real estate industry is perfect for military spouses.

Yes, you’ll need to re-test if you move states if that state doesn’t share reciprocity with the state where you are currently licensed. It’s extra expenses and it’s extra time–yet let’s look at the opportunity in that. You’ll now be able to serve clients in two or more areas! Whoa, how cool is that! Most realtors never leave their local area and yet military spouses come and go. Can you imagine the possibilities of starting up a new team, brokerage, or business everywhere you go? The opportunities with that are pretty amazing–and expansive!

Now let’s tackle the second issue. You’ll need to create a new book of business everywhere you go. Yes, it is true, your network is closely related to your net worth. Yet consider that for a moment. If you’re able to create a database of serving clients in every market you go to, that is a pretty big overall database that has so many opportunities.

And because military spouses are resilient and determined, two of the biggest qualities you’ll need as a real estate professional, they already have the mindset that takes others years to form. From adaptability to networking and determination, we are well-equipped to handle the challenges and complexities of the housing market.

Ultimately, military spouses bring a unique set of skills and experiences to the real estate industry. From adaptability to networking and determination, we are well-equipped to handle the challenges and complexities of the housing market. As a military spouse, realtor turned coach, I am proud to represent this community and help others find their dream career.
