Let It Fall: You Don’t Owe Anyone a Highlight Reel

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes not from doing too much, but from performing too much. From curating your life for an audience that didn’t ask for a front row seat. From waking up every morning and unconsciously asking, before you’ve even had coffee, what will people think of this?

I want to give you permission to stop.

Not to stop caring about the people in your life. Not to stop showing up with excellence in the things that genuinely matter to you. But to stop organizing your choices, your identity, and your season around the approval of people who are not paying your bills, carrying your load, or lying awake at night with the weight of your specific life on their chest.

You are allowed to live a life that is imperfect. Unphotogenic. Messy. Completely and unapologetically yours.

What the Trees Already Know

Every fall, without any help from us, the trees do something remarkable. They let go. Not reluctantly, not apologetically, but in a blaze of color so beautiful that people drive hours just to watch it happen. And then, when the color is done, the branches go bare. Stripped down to their essential structure. Ready.

There is something worth borrowing in that image.

Fall is not just a season on the calendar. It is an invitation to do intentionally what the trees do naturally — to shed what has been draining you, what has served its season but no longer serves your growth, what looks good from the outside but is quietly costing you everything on the inside.

This is your permission to let some things fall.

Even the Things You Are Known For

Here is where it gets uncomfortable, and I want to sit here with you for a moment.

Some of the things you need to release are not bad things. They might be things people applaud you for. Things you have been awarded for. Things so woven into how others see you that you have started to mistake their perception for your identity.

Maybe it’s the role you play in every group — the one who holds it all together, the one who never needs anything, the one who shows up even when she is falling apart. Maybe it’s the volunteer commitment you said yes to three years ago when your life looked completely different. Maybe it’s the version of yourself you performed through a season of military life because it was easier than explaining the truth.

You are not obligated to keep being that for anyone. Not even for people who loved that version of you.

Growth requires shedding. The tree does not apologize for losing its leaves. It does not try to tape them back on because the other trees still have theirs. It lets them go because letting them go is what makes room for what comes next.

Your Life Doesn’t Owe Anyone a Highlight Reel

Military spouse life in particular carries a strange pressure to perform resilience. To make the deployment look manageable, the PCS look seamless, the solo parenting look graceful. To post the family photo at the new duty station before you’ve even unpacked the grief of leaving the last one.

And social media has made it worse. We are all, to some degree, editing our lives in real time for an audience we have never met, seeking validation from people who do not know our story.

What would it look like to just stop?

To let the house be a little messy in the background of the photo. To skip the photo entirely. To tell someone the honest answer when they ask how you’re doing instead of reflexively saying fine. To make a decision about your own life based entirely on what is right for you and your family, without running it through the filter of how it will be received.

It will feel strange at first. It might even feel irresponsible. That is how deeply we have been trained to outsource our own permission.

Shed It on Purpose

So this fall, I want to invite you to do something intentional. Walk outside. Watch the leaves. And ask yourself honestly: what am I holding onto past its season?

What commitment, expectation, identity, or performance am I carrying that is no longer mine to carry? What would I let go of if I truly believed I had permission to do so?

Then give yourself that permission. Not because you have earned it through enough suffering. Not because you have a good enough reason. But because it is your life. Imperfect, unphotogenic, messy, and yours.

Let it fall. See what the bare branches make room for.

That is where the new growth comes from.
