What Military Spouses Can Learn About Entrepreneurship, Priorities and Building a Business That Fits

Military Spouse Life Taught Me to Adapt

Military spouses become experts at adapting.

We learn to rebuild routines after a PCS, navigate unexpected changes, and make the best of circumstances we didn’t choose. Long before I became an entrepreneur, those experiences taught me that flexibility isn’t just a skill – it’s a way of life.

Years later, after my husband retired from the Navy, I started Charliemadison Originals with just $200, a brand-new Etsy shop, and a dream of turning a creative hobby into something more – all while working full-time as a scientist and raising a young family. Long before I became an entrepreneur, those experiences taught me that flexibility isn’t just a skill – it’s a way of life. For military spouses, that adaptability can become a powerful advantage when building a business as a military spouse, especially when you’re trying to create a career that can move with your family.

With 14 years as a military spouse and years spent running experiments in a cancer research laboratory, I assumed adapting would be one of my greatest strengths as a business owner.

In many ways, it was.

But I also discovered something I didn’t expect – one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned as a military spouse entrepreneur.

When You’re Solving the Wrong Business Problem

I was hyper-organized, laser-focused, and an expert multitasker. Give me a spreadsheet and I could organize any project like a boss. I believed my biggest challenge was finding enough time. So I created endless to-do lists.

Then I convinced myself that if I just found the “perfect” planner, or latest system, or a better organizational tool, things would fall right into place.

Later, I convinced myself every business decision had to be the right one before I could move forward.

Looking back, none of those were the real problem. I was solving the wrong problems because I was asking the wrong questions.

The planner wasn’t going to make my decisions for me.

A longer to-do list wasn’t going to tell me what mattered most.

Waiting until I felt certain wasn’t going to make better decisions – it was only delaying them.

Be the Bracelet Queens

One conversation completely changed the way I thought about business.

I was chatting with a beloved mentor about how frustrated I was trying to build a jewelry business that looked like everyone else’s. I loved creating bracelets, but I felt pressured to design matching collections because that’s what the industry said “successful” jewelry businesses should do.

She listened for a moment, smiled, and said,

“Wendy, if you and Madison want to be the bracelet queens, then be the bracelet queens.”

That one sentence changed everything. It gave me permission to stop chasing someone else’s definition of success and taught me a new way to think as an entrepreneur.

What Military Spouse Entrepreneurs Can Learn From Asking Better Questions

The questions we ask ourselves matter.

And usually, the first question your brain asks isn’t the most helpful one. So let’s ask a better one.

Instead of asking, “How do I do more?” I started asking, “What actually matters today?”

Instead of wondering, “What if I make the wrong decision?” I asked, “What’s the next decision I can make with the information I have right now?”

Instead of trying to build a business that looked like everyone else’s, I started building one that fit my life.

As military spouses, that’s a lesson we already understand.

Building a Business Around Military Life

Military spouse entrepreneurs don’t always have the luxury of following a five-year plan exactly as written. PCS moves happen. Deployments happen. Children need us. Jobs change. Priorities shift. Sometimes the business has to grow slowly because life requires our attention somewhere else.

That doesn’t make the business less legitimate. It means the business has to work for the life you’re actually living—not the life someone else’s business plan assumes you have.

One of the biggest advantages of entrepreneurship for military spouses is the possibility of creating work that can move with you. But a portable career still needs to be built intentionally, with systems and priorities that can survive the next PCS.

No two military family journeys look exactly alike.

Why should entrepreneurship be any different?

Your business doesn’t have to follow someone else’s roadmap to be successful.

It can reflect your strengths.

Your season of life.

Your family.

Your priorities.

Your definition of success.

So if you’re feeling overwhelmed today, I’d encourage you to pause before searching for another strategy, another app, another planner, or more ideas.

Ask yourself one simple question:

Am I solving the right problem?

More often than not, the problem we think we have isn’t the one that’s actually keeping us stuck.

Sometimes asking a better question is the first step toward building a business that fits your life.

That’s often where the best kind of progress begins.
