Spring Cleaning…But Make It PCS-Ready

Spring cleaning hits different when you live the military lifestyle.

For civilians, it’s about fresh starts.
For military families, it’s about pre-PCS damage control.

Because even if you don’t have orders in hand, you know they’re coming. Eventually. And when they do, you don’t want to be staring at a junk drawer from 2019 wondering why you own 37 mismatched Tupperware lids.

Here’s how to spring clean like a military spouse who knows better.

1. Declutter Like You’re Paying by the Pound (Because You Are)

Even if the military moves you, weight allowances are real. The less you move, the less chaos you manage on the other end.

Ask yourself: Would I pack this if I had to load it myself? Have I used this since the last duty station? Is this sentimental — or just clutter?

If it’s neither functional nor meaningful, it’s probably not PCS-worthy.

2. Tackle the Paper Trail

Military families have paperwork like it’s a competitive sport.

Spring reset:

  • Update your emergency binder.
  • Scan important documents.
  • Check IDs and expiration dates.
  • Organize medical and school records.

Future you will be deeply grateful.

3. Rotate Seasonal Gear

Snow boots, beach chairs, random base-issued items — March is the perfect time to inventory what you actually use.

Pro tip: If you forgot you owned it, you probably don’t need it.

4. Emotional Decluttering Counts Too

Spring cleaning isn’t just physical.

Let go of the guilt about not volunteering enough. The pressure to “handle everything.” The comparison trap with other military spouses.

Military life already asks a lot. You don’t need to carry extra weight.

5. Create a PCS “Go Box”

Even without orders, gather together important documents, chargers, basic cleaning supplies, kids’ comfort items, and pet records

When the moving truck chaos hits, you’ll feel slightly less feral.

Military spring cleaning isn’t about aesthetic pantries.

It’s about control in a lifestyle that often feels uncontrollable.

Decluttering won’t stop orders from changing. It won’t prevent last-minute surprises. But it will give you space — physically and mentally — to handle what’s next. And that’s not small.

PCS season always comes. But this year? You’ll be ready.
