Many people find it quite challenging to choose right careers when they are leaving the military because they can’t decide which field of work can suit their needs and expectations.

This is an issue that many people face. Some people have a specific idea of what they are looking for. However, the majority of former militaries, who have spent the majority of their professional career in the military, are just unsure what kind of job they want to get. There are many questions that can be crossing your mind. However, in this post, I would like to give you some pieces of advice that, hopefully, will help you find a job after the military!

What Are The Most Common Vacancies?

There is a list of the most popular jobs for ex-military personnel. The majority of people tend to look for the following opportunities:

  • Police officer
  • Security officer (both for government and private agencies)
  • Pilot
  • Civilian public service
  • Many others!

Each of them is popular as it allows former military to apply the skills gained in the military at a new job, which makes the transition period a bit easier and raises chances to succeed!

However, there are also many other opportunities.

Another popular job is entrepreneur and it is a good choice for those veterans who are not looking for an official employment and just want to run their own business, which can be really any.

How To Choose The Most Suitable Careers After The Military?

Although you are now aware of that there are many common ex-military careers, it does not mean that one of them will suit your personal expectations and needs! Thus, choosing your future job, you have to focus mainly on yourself, your skills, knowledge, interests, and abilities!

This process can be time-consuming and challenging. You will have to do some research and compare different options. Attending a few interviews, creating and polishing your resume and CV, and even get rejected are also integral parts of this process, and the first thing you should keep in mind is that you always have to keep going!

How to make it a bit easier? The most convenient and simple way to make the right decision is to use a self-assessment tool – it is a program that will give you a list of possible options based on your experience, education, personal qualities, and goals. As a rule, such tools can be quite helpful! There is a wide variety of such tools. Some of them are paid, but there are also those that are free of charge, which one to use is a personal decision of every person, but here is the list of the top five online tools for choosing a suitable career for yourself!

What to keep in mind? Using such tools can give you comprehensive feedback on your abilities, interests, and skills, but it does not mean that it should be decisive! Do not get upset if the list of recommended jobs does not meet your expectations because it is just a starting point for you, it is just a way to find some clarity, and I am confident that you will find something suitable if you devote enough time and effort!

What Is The Most Effective Path To Getting The Desired Job?

You can have a long track record and be a real master of your craft but, unfortunately, this is not enough to get hired instantly for the job of your dreams. Thus, you will have to endeavor a bit! What are the main steps to getting any jobs after the military?

  • Prepare a well-written resume;
  • Focus on the aspects that make you a unique candidate;
  • Use the available resources that can help you find opportunities and land interviews, for example, VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) can help you create a top-notch CV and find a starting point;
  • Learn how to succeed at that interview;
  • Never stop improving;
  • And, once you get the job, make sure that you remain flexible, work effectively, and not less important – do not underestimate the importance of building social relations at the workplace!

Final Words

What is the best place to work? It is only up to you! There are almost unlimited opportunities and what is even more important – you do not have to look for something similar to your previous career as it is never too late to master another craft! It is natural that you may have concerns and worries about your future, but you should never give up on the way towards your goals, and you will not remain disappointed!
