We exhibit one set of behaviors at home, another at work or even on vacation. We might be bold online, shy in person, talkative to friends, awkward with strangers. Who we were a decade ago might only tenuously resemble who we are today as our interests, responsibilities, relationships transform. We may even audition a whole new identity from time to time.
In Dating By the Book, Maddie is at a crossroads, struggling between who she’s been and who she wants to become. She’s walked away from one career to start a new venture running a bookstore, and she can’t help but second-guess the path she’s chosen. She’s also turned a writing hobby into a profession but hasn’t quite embraced her burgeoning identity as an author. Jilted at the altar months ago, she’s gone from almost wed to totally single. And now, she’s re-considering how to relate to the various men in her life: An ex-fiance, a high school flame, a childhood friend, a casual acquaintance, and a virtual stranger. Could any of them be hiding a secret identity as potential romantic hero? To answer that question, Maddie needs to figure out who she wants to be and fit together all the puzzle pieces of her life.
