10. Be patient.

Being in a military relationship will test every ounce of your patience and then some. Be patient with your spouse’s work schedule, with PCS plans, with ETS plans, and with each other.

11. Take advantage of the FRG and the programs offered to spouses and your children.

The FRG is there to help you in every aspect with military life. Take advantage of the meetings and events held. There are only there to help you and make you feel more welcome.

12. Focus on the moment.

Most military relationships are used to spending a majority of their time separated due to work. When they come home, don’t start up every single argument that you have had over the phone or Skype simply because they are in person. Enjoy the moment in front of you and appreciate that you spouse is home.

13. Communicate

In any relationship, communication is key. Especially in regards to finances and raising children, make sure to keep communication flowing. You both may disagree on a certain parenting style, but without communication the other spouse may never know. Make sure to keep communication open and keep spirits light when talking about tougher topics. Try not to get too upset when your spouse is just speaking their mind to you, or they may shut down completely.

14. Do not get involved with his work.

Do not go to his chain of command for any reason to question their decisions. Whether that is why they had a late night at work or why a field exercise was extended. He is grown man and can stand up for himself. The only thing you would be accomplishing by approaching your husband’s chain of command is getting your husband in trouble or embarrassed.

15. Do not get involved in drama.

It can be very easy to get wrapped up in the drama around base, but it will only bring negative energy into your life. Avoid the drama as best as possible, and enjoy the adventure that you and your husband are embarking on.

Remember always to love each other and keep each other’s best interest in mind.
