Ahhhhh, debt. DEBT. It’s sad, scary, and just plain cruel how that terrible four-letter word can weigh you down: As an individual, as a couple, and as a family.
When my husband and I got married, we had more than enough debt between the two of us. College loans, pre-commissioning loans, personal loans, and credit cards…It was painful. We existed on one paycheck — his — for several months, thanks to the fact I was going through the expensive process of attaining a green card (where, by the way, I wasn’t legally able to get a job). And still, that delightful debt had to be paid off somehow.
Everyone has their own unique circumstances, and if you’ve ever accumulated a certain amount of debt, then I’m sure you’ll understand the stress that goes along with it. It’s a burden that follows you everywhere. Every day, you evaluate even your most basic wants and your most basic needs. You fall asleep tallying numbers, instead of counting sheep — or you stay awake for hours, grinding those same figures over and over again.
Fortunately, all is not lost. When you feel like you’re drowning in debt, remember: You can swim, and you have to. And there are many ways to do so.
