Soul Survivor Outdoors: A Radical Approach to Wellness for Active-Duty Service Members

In the heart of every warrior lies the unyielding spirit of toughness, but even the bravest hearts need nourishment. Enter Soul Survivor Outdoor (SSO), a faith-based outdoor adventure ministry that’s on a mission to empower active-duty military service members through Christ-centered spiritual fitness and wellness programs. SSO is not just about surviving; it’s about thriving.

Soul Survivor Outdoor is a dedicated, active-duty military-focused ministry. The team is comprised of individuals who are passionate about serving those who are currently in the line of duty. SSO is not a veteran service organization; but their sole focus is on active-duty military service members. The programs offered are specifically designed with the military in mind and are provided at no cost to the government or the service member. At SSO, the programs are funded solely by private donors, foundations, and corporations.

Spiritual Fitness in Action

SSO’s comprehensive approach to physical, mental, and spiritual fitness helps active-duty military service members become more mission-ready, combat-effective, and capable of tackling life’s challenges, both on and off the battlefield. Providing an opportunity for challenge, SSO believes in pushing boundaries. At SSO events, leaders engage active-duty military in thrilling outdoor activities such as rock climbing, skydiving, surfing, white-water rafting, trail rides, and skeet shooting, to name a few. These experiences purposefully take service members out of their comfort zones, fostering growth in unexpected ways.

In addition to the outdoor thrills, every adventure is accompanied by faith-based discussions led by fellow active-duty military or veterans. These conversations explore identity and how a strong spiritual foundation positively impacts every aspect of fitness. Service members return to their units having grown in ways that make them more effective individuals and team members.

These outdoor adventure events provide commanders and chaplains with a wellness program that ensures service members are physically, mentally, and spiritually fit. Published studies emphasize the crucial role of spiritual fitness in overall well-being and resiliency. Spiritual fitness and outdoor adventure directly contribute to mission readiness. They strengthen resiliency, moral and ethical decision-making, and the overall well-being of our nation’s warriors.

SSO hosts free Christ-centered outdoor adventure events for active-duty military throughout the year. Each year, 1,500 or more service members attend SSO events. These events are held across the nation and around the globe, adjacent to active-duty U.S. military bases. SSO works directly with commands to schedule events and support their service members.

By attending an SSO event, active-duty military service members can expect:

  • Strengthened physical, mental, and spiritual fitness.
  • Greater focus, coordination, and confidence in physical ability.
  • Improved spiritual fitness and an understanding that faith and warriorhood are not mutually exclusive.
  • Perseverance and confidence in their own mental toughness and personal courage.
  • Enhanced teamwork and trust in peers and leaders.

Join them in the mission to fortify brave warriors, ensuring they’re equipped to face whatever challenges lie ahead. Learn more online, share with command teams, and get involved through prayer and giving. You can help this organization continue to strengthen our nation’s warriors.
