3 Non-Scale Victories to Measure During Your Weight Loss Journey

How many times have you jumped on the scale after a long week only to be greeted with a number you didn’t expect? You’re shocked! How could that be? You were on top of your nutrition, eating healthy has been your job lately. You killed your workouts all week. And you’ve been drinking more water THAN EVER. So how is it possible that the scale went UP this week? There are a lot of factors that play into what you see on the scale and what you see there is far from the whole story. When it comes to losing weight, we put a lot of stock into the scale and when that number is less than favorable, it’s easy to get down on ourselves. The truth is the scale is ONLY ONE indicator of your health and weight loss journey, but it most certainly isn’t the end-all-be-all that we sometimes make it out to be. This is why at Delta Life Fitness we encourage everyone to focus on Non-Scale Victories in addition to those successes on the scale. A Non-Scale Victory is a measurement of success in your health and wellness journey. These measurements are indicators of your progress without focusing solely on a number on the scale. Here are three examples of Non-Scale Victories. 1. Your Clothes Are Getting Looser Going with how your clothes fit is a great indicator of your progress. If your clothes are getting looser, not only is it exciting, but it also means you are gaining lean muscle and losing fat. Sometimes, when you jump on the scale and your weight has gone up, it’s because you have gained muscle. The old saying, “muscle weighs more than fat” is completely true. It may appear for a short time that the scale has gone up, but if you’re gaining muscle you’re going to be losing inches. Losing inches = looser clothes, regardless of what the scale says. 2. You’re Getting Stronger This non-scale victory is one of our favorites. Achieving strength and gaining more endurance is something so MANY overlook, when in fact it should be one of the most celebrated victories! Think back to when you first began working out. Take a moment to think about something you couldn’t do or something that was particularly challenging to you when you first started. Now, think about what you have been accomplishing lately. I guarantee you that you have made some pretty spectacular progress in what your body is now able to accomplish. No matter how small your progress, if you’re working out, you’re getting stronger every day. You should be celebrating your improved strength every day without fail. It’s your strong body that will go on to accomplish great feats of strength and honoring that is huge! 3. You Have More Energy Who doesn’t want more energy? For most of us, our days are hectic and filled to the brim, which can leave us tired, drained and stressed. Working out and eating healthy improves your energy level without fail, because you are strengthening your body’s circulation. The better your circulation is, the better your body performs. Not only does working out help you gain more energy throughout your day, but it helps you sleep better at night. This means you start your day with EVEN MORE energy, creating a cycle for your body to continually have expendable energy. So when you’ve been giving it your all and the scale doesn’t reflect the effort you put in, take a moment to reflect on the non-scale victories you’ve achieved (and maybe hide your scale for awhile). There are so many moments where you have made progress in your health and wellness journey that have absolutely nothing to do with your weight. We want you to remember that you are MORE than just a number on a scale. If you’re making great efforts in your health and wellness journey you should be celebrating those as well, not just a silly number on the scale.
