10 Things NOT to Write in a Deployment Letter to Your Spouse

6. Don’t Guilt Trip

Don’t guilt trip your spouse for being on deployment. Your spouse didn’t make the decision to go on deployment or be away from you and they are not purposefully not responding to your communications.

Your spouse needs to focus on their mission while they are on deployment. It’s unfair and can even be dangerous to distress them while they are gone, because it could distract them from their mission.

7. “Do you even still care?”

Sometimes our spouses aren’t always able to contact us very often on deployment and it can be easy to let doubts sink in.

Remember that your spouse loves you and have faith in them that they still feel the same. Instead of letting insecurity creep in, remind your spouse of how much you love and care for them.

8. Bad News

If there’s bad news that’s not a dire situation, it may be best to wait to tell your spouse so they don’t have to worry or be stressed about things back home while they’re away.

They CAN’T change anything from where they are and worrying about a family member’s health or similar issues can distract them from their mission.

9. “Dear John”

For those considering writing “Dear John” letters, think about how you would feel to be notified via USPS that your relationship is over.

A “Dear John” letter isn’t fair to you or to your spouse.

If you feel that you need to end the relationship, give your spouse the courtesy of waiting and telling them in person when they get back home.

10. “You’re not trying”

It can feel like your spouse isn’t trying to contact you or be there for you from afar, but remember that how often they’re able to contact you ISN’T up to them.

Remember how much your spouse loves you and that they’re thinking of you all the time while they’re away. Most of all, remember that they’re trying the best they can to be there for you as much as possible while they are defending our country on their deployment.

It can be hard to know what to write while your spouse is on deployment, but as long as you write with the spirit of love and the faith that you have in them, you can’t go wrong.
